What's up with this? I once heard that due to a shortage of seforim during WW II some of the Shanghai Mirrers learned to read this way. Maybe the same was true in Yemen.

Anyone have a good caption?

I had heard the same thing, though it was about the "old world" in general, not Mir - that due to a shortage of books some learned the "right way" and some learned from the left, right, or upside down. No idea if it's true or apocryphal.

As for the picture: "Makes about as much sense this way as right-side up!"

It's apocryphal, at least in the Mir and in Sanaa at least according to various old people I bothered when I was a kid. An intelligent Mori/melamed switch the kids around so everyone would have a chance to see the words right side up.
