Hoof and Mouth Disease

CLICK.

On three different occasions during Super Bowl 46 NY Football Giants punter Steve Weatherford swung his mighty and accurate hoof to pin the Patriots inside their own 10 yard line. The first of these led to an immediate safety and, arguably, set the tone for a Gigantic Giant victory.

After the game his mouth roared in a remark of exquisite snark.

I suppose that it's human nature to gloat. As the wise T-Shirt says: "living well is the best revenge." Once you've won it all you can talk trash. So I do not deny Steve Weatherfords comments. I merely resent them.

I check your blog periodically, and I must say I AM SHOCKED, mamish shocked, that you Mr. Havdala, keeper of the flame for charediism as a people apart, should devote not one, but two posts to this pagan ritual of the superbowl. I have little doubt you think participation in world culture is not right for bnei torah. You write against college attendance. Why then does sports not count as an acculturation and an identification with macho aspects of the doiminant culture?

I'll repeat what I said to you before and which proved correct...stick with Jewish material you know from life experience. You will be matzliach. Darshan every which way and people have no reason to read your blog.Do you really think there is a shortage of post mortems on this silly game?

I want to know about BP and Flatbush, Monsey and Lakewood, Williamsburg and CH, Lawrence and Teaneck. What's happening bein bgashmiyus bein beruchniyus. Tell me of new seforim, new ideologies...the topics are endless. But from football there is no where to go...soon you'll be talking about point spreads on the NCAA games and golf handicaps.

Great catch.Almost as great as Mario Mannighams. You'll notice that under labels they all say "placeholder". The kind of posts that you demand require a lot more thought and time than I have at my disposal right now.

Close reading will also reveal these posts to be full of wry observations, word plays, double entendres and wit.

Also: perhaps if you had joined the discussion during my seminal and thought provoking chasidification posts instead of holding your peace and launching todays tirade I'd be more inspired to write those kinds of posts. It's called positive reinforcement. When the Bloggish oilem can produce nearly as many comments on a Jet-Giant envy post as on a rise of the Mega-Yeshivas post then why bother with the latter
איך בין ביטער ווי גאל איבער דעם

Finally I'll say this: Go find what you seek on Circus Tent and others. I am not a hocker or a gossiper. Even though SomeHowFrum is the blogger who has wrapped himself in the mantel of a Loshon Hora free blog I think that you'll notice a conspicuous absence here in the 'ol Red tent of attacks on individuals (except for the muvdolim and Okhrei Yisroel).

I really try to live my blog,if not my life, by Elenor Roosevelts credo "Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people."

and that, IMO in the final analysis is why I will never be a popular blogger. It's not because I haven't monetized, tweeted, Facebookfriended, posted more/less frequently or changed the layout.

You write against college attendance.

BTW where/ when have I done this?

Like anything else it's OK or even good for some folks and bad for others.

I'm not an advocate of one-size-fits-all education.

Can't say I blame him.

It would be interesting to look at how players who are deemed "not good enough" do with their new team once they are traded. Anecdotally you hear a lot about players getting fired up and performing better after being traded.

It's an interesting comment on human nature that maybe we sometimes need to be taken down a notch to reach our full potential.

Not true,,no, no, no...I wrote back and forth with you at length when your chasidification post was picked up by RHM. How many volumes must I write to give you positive reinforcement?

Your views on secular knowledge: "Wait for part two but b'kitzur I basically have no problems with many of the tznius khumras as they are to compensate for a culture much more lascivious and hyper-sexualized than that of the 50s and while I oppose the secular studies hostility it is not because I am pro-secular studies per se but because it aids and abets the more overarching problem of tyrannical conformity that IMO stultifies and depresses people, especially youngn's" 11/18/11

My tirade is like this...I am asking for a clarification what are the criteria when you play the havdalah card and when you don't? If super bowl is ok, and secular studies is ok today but not a month ago,I am missing something of your view.

I read Tzig religiously. I am not asking for more lashon hara, though that would be fine. I am asking for that which I cannot do easily, phenomenology...how is ish Bobov different from ish Skver, what is it like to be an X, and how does an X differ in feeling tone and world view from being a Y?

And finally,I hope you understand I am not giving you mussar or telling you in any way how to live. I never do that to anyone.I am responding to your ideas in a serious way, and I am responding to your chronic complaint of not being read and appreciated. I feel the best way to give you feedback is to give you feedback, since whatever my biases I am a reader of your blog.

Yes, and I enjoyed every WON of them. 'Tis truly a pity that we need to blog about secular topics, but that is what the Oilem wants. Even Matzav has been posting religiously about the pig-skinned game.

As for the picture, I think it is awful. Really awful. Atrocious.

In reality, this was not such a great "feet", as most of his punts were booted from mid-field position.

But the Musar we can learn from his situation is that when you are "booted" off one team for lack of consistent booting, you just might end up "kicking" yourself that you weren't kicked out from your loser team sooner. :-(
