Havdala Consciousness != a Superiority Complex

In response to this I wrote:

Be Havdala-expansive...not Havdala -narrow.
Havdala consciousness includes the knowledge of the difference between Shabbos and the six days of Creation.  A Jew must live through both.
Havdala consciousness includes the knowledge of the difference between the Holy and the Mundane.  Diaspora Jews need to be aware that they are disconnected from the Holy Land.
Havdala consciousness includes the knowledge of the difference between not only Jew and non-Jew but Kohen, Levi, Yisrael and the Royal-Messianic Line.
Havdala consciousness includes the knowledge of the difference between human- animal- plant and inert, young and old, male and female and Jew-by-birth and Jew-by-choice.
Havdala consciousness includes the knowledge of the difference between the diverse pathways of Avodah for a Tzadik and a Ba'al Teshuva.
Most of all Havdala consciousness sensitizes the  Havdala conscious to grasp the difference between Creator and Creature.
Only a myopic Havdala-narrow Jew would feel nothing but "superiority" Any given Jew/ess of any age, tribe or Gender should be able to feel and live with innate-difference grounded advantages and disadvantages and live their lives accordingly without experiencing cognitive dissonance. Thanks for inspiring my next post.

Beating the Elul Rush-A QWERTY Confessional Redux

No...not me.  I'm already cauterized clean as a whistle.  One might say that my filtration software has been properly installed and that my connectivity has been disabled. But my Bloggish host Bray is too busy and conflicted to blog right now so he asked me to reprise an old post of his.  As he is feeling a lot of guilt about blogging post-Asifa it is a blogging Vidui even though two full months must pass before Elul.

As a loyal contemporary follower of Amramowitz the Younger, The Bray displays characteristically hiding-in-plain-sight cognitive dissonance and denial. For an absolutely breathtaking example of Amramowitz the Youngerish hypocrisy please take special note of the confession that begins with "R":

There are a whole lot of sins that are unique to J-Bloggers בכלל and to humble me בפרט. As traditionally our viduyim = confessionals run the gamut from Aleph to Taf and as the prime instrument of Bloggish sins is the QWERTY keyboard I submit to you a work in progress , a Viduy for J-Bloggers, a QWERTY confessional
In order to capture the proper Artscrollish ambiance appropriate for Fundie Brayers I will italicize the entire Vidui:

For the sin that I have sinned before you by ....

Q' seder spelling things with Qs that are conventionally spelled with Ks, just to look arch and to annoy the readers

hining publicly about lack of traffic, comments and attention when you have bestowed far more meaningful gifts upon me that I ought to be grateful for

rring about facts, figures, dates and names and not bothering to do the research to correct them

egurgitating old posts that weren't even very good the first time around

yping without thinking and in violation of all laws and conventions of grammar and spelling even to the point of overriding the green and red-lined mussar that my word-processor so kindly provides.

akking interminably in the comment threads when its a monologue and not a dialogue

nderachieving in
real life and overcompensating by blogging obsessively

ntroducing unsuspecting neophytes to the roiling cesspool that is the rough-and-ready J-Blogosphere

ozing exaggerated gratitude for the merest intimation of a compliment and thus manifesting a borderline psychotic insecurity hungering for
כבוד המדומה = illusory honor and prestige
bfuscating to hide my ignorance when I ought to just say “I don’t know”

osturing and pretending to hold positions and opinions that, in truth, do not reflect my own

A ttacking people instead of their arguments and/or positions

S plitting hairs and parsing words and phrases in order not to be pinned down to a position that has been disproven

D amning with faint praise

F isking those targets that are not likely to read or respond

G oogle-ing and posting images with little regard to copyrights

H urling insults and pejoratives when I’ve exhausted my supply of arguments

J esting unfunnily with a tin ear for comedy

K nocking things before I’ve tried them

L ollygagging and not researching unfamiliar topics thoroughly. L ollygagging and ignoring my many other real-life obligations in order to blog in an OCD way

Z ealously defending my right to apathy

X punging comments that ought best never have been thought of, much less posted in the first place. But it was too late, the damage was already done. Including but not limited to those comments transgressing the very real and grave sin of Khilul HaShem

C hameleonymously blogging instead of attaching my name proudly and courageously to my own opinions
V enom spewing in ways that confirm every spurious Kharedi-bashing canard

B ashing the slightest whiff of criticism when I should stop, contemplate, and listen and, in the best case scenarios, be built by the constructive criticism. Bringing infamy instead of glory to Havdala consciousness

N ot sticking to SWE when posting and commenting

M ollifying my critics by compromising my principles…in other words selling-out

I have examined all the keys of my board from “M” to “Q” and found them wanting. There is nothing cogent or compelling in them.
Of course…Much of this is projection and sins I find bloggers other than myselfguilty of . Kind of like the actual vidui that we do on Yom Kippur. This list is also afflicted with the fundamental structural problem of lip-service confessionals and “ritualarium submersion while still grasping the contaminating rodent carcass” as I have little intention of modifying even those Bloggish behaviors I KNOW myself to be guilty of.

In the final analysis this “new confessional” is akin to a streetwalker authoring a new A to Z vidui where she owns to among other things, drug abuse, dishonesty, the destruction of homes and the dissemination of STDs. (And those were just the "Ds"!) The Teshuva for such a sinner is not to correct this or that detail of her lifestyle but to leave the bawdy-house and look for another line of work.

Anybody know some kosher hobbies?

Have you had YOUR Qedusha-Havdala today??? Hmmm???

Losing חשק

I invest much time energy and, in some cases, my very heart and soul into my posts.  In the wake of consistent tepid numbers both in terms of page views and in terms of thoughtful comments on those posts, and in the wake of the historical turning point brought about by the CitiField Asifa that "heightened consciousness" to recognize the evil incarnate that is the internet I'd be less than candid if I didn't confess that I'm beginning to lose the  חשק to blog.

Besides, I think that my main   Raison d'être, to raise Havdala-Qedusha Consciousness and to do rhetorical battle with the Oifgeklehrteh Blogs has been superseded by Haredi and Proud who does the bloody and blood-curdling work with greater zeal and less ambivalence than I can muster after 6 years in the trenches. Not to mention that he is obviously way more tech savvy than I and that he presents a Blog that is far easier on the eyes.

Just thought that I'd share that .

Yiddish Über English

or Apartheid Unity at the Asifa Part II
To khop what's going on read Part I first

זאהל זיין אז אידיש איז נישט לשון קודש... עס איז כאטש לשון קדושים
"Let it be that Yiddish is not the Holy Tongue" I heard many a Holocaust survivor aver "it IS the tongue of the holy / the martyrs"

For many Kharedim, particularly for Khasidim, Yiddish is not just another language.  Unquestionably many Khasidim have little inkling that Yiddish is a dialect of middle-low German written in Hebrew Characters (Ivra-Taitch= עברי-דייטש) with healthy servings of Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Aramaic and translated Talmudic idioms thrown into the linguistic stew. Yet most are well aware of all of the above but could care less.  For them "you can't spell Yiddishkeit without Yiddish" and Yiddish fluency and literacy is central to ones Jewish identity.

Moreover, many non-Khasidim have internalized this lesson and are somewhat cowed and intimidated by the perception of greater Kharedi, in particular, Khasidish "authenticity". The language is a major component  of the Khasidisha err, Yiddisha, panache. The levush, the peyos, the insular neighborhoods, the sofrim, shokhtim, mohalim and poskim would all mean far less if all the signage, newspapers, posters and the speech were not in Yiddish.  While we all strive to be Torah-True it is they, the thinking goes, who are Torah-Truer. In  no small part this is due to a language which informs all their thoughts, speech and even deeds with a Havdala-from-the-dominant culture consciousness.  Hearing sundry Twerskis publishing and orating in the Queens English gives the rest of us a cognitive-dissonance headache.  Someone who LOOKS like that ought not to be SPEAKING like that!

Which brings us to the Great Citifield Asifa where seldom was heard, a S'fas HaMedinah word, but where apologies for same were the order of the day.

A Humorous Interlude

received by email:

This Leitzonus was obviously composed by someone illiterate in Yiddish.  Not that I am particularly eloquent in Yiddish but here's how I'd fix-up the Yiddish portion of the message:
טיירע שליח
זיי אפגעהיט'ן -פארזיכטיג
די הייליגער רבנים האבען ג'פסקנ'ט אז מען טאהר ניט אריין טרעט'ן
אין אונזערע שטוב וייל מיר באנוצען זיך מיט'ן "אינטערנעט" [פפע!] ט

Apartheid "Unity" at the Asifa

The Great Asifa at Citifield  was organized by an outfit known as Ichud Hakehillos LeTohar HaMachane= “Congregations United for the Purity of the Camp”. Unity is part and parcel of their  Raison d'être . The Glass-Half-Full attitude toward the Asifa accentuates the great sense of Achdus that participants felt. I won't regurgitate the obvious questions re unity when noting the great swaths of Torah-Observant Jewry who were absent. Yet I'd like to dissent from the Glass-Half-Full attitude by pointing out an underlying, yet overt, schism even among those who were present at Citifield and at Arthur Ashe Stadium; I speak of  The Great Yiddish / English Divide.

The lions share of the addresses were delivered in Yiddish. In itself  this was  neither surprising nor insulting.  It was a merely a manifestation of the common practice of  ethnic proportional representation so common in Balkanized Parliaments and Frum Parties in Israel. When the ESL-ers (the English Second  Language) outnumber the EFL-ers (the English First  Language) by about 15-1 (as they seemed to at the Asifa) it is rational and fair that the evenings program be directed primarily towards the native Yiddish speakers. This demographic-breakdown analysis goes far towards explaining both the seating at the dais, the roster of speakers  and the fact that they spoke in Yiddish.

What I did find mildly surprising and vaguely insulting was that the few speakers who did actually speak in English were finicky about:
A. Issuing multiple disclaimers and an apologies for communicating in the S'fas HaMedinah. and
B. Making sure to speak bilingually and toggling back and forth between English and Yiddish.

Furthermore the organizers of the Event made no attempts at simultaneous Yiddish subtitle translation scrolling at the bottom of the Jumbotron screens when the  English speakers spoke. It was as if messages delivered via the medium of English were of no value whatsoever to the ESL-ers. Why bother translating that which is of no importance or significance?

The inescapable impression left on those Jews whose Momma Loshin is English is that they are somehow deficient, second class Jews. The overt message of the evening was that if you use the internet without filtration software you aren't much of a Jew. The sub-textual message of the evening was that if you use English as your primary language you aren't much of a Jew, ahem Yeed,  either.  Like the "Great Satan"...the  Internet itself, the "little Satan"... English fluency affords a Yeed or Yeedina= Jewess access to all kinds of things that s/he best not be seeing, reading or ruminating over.

No doubt the upcoming Flatbush "Asifa" this coming Sunday evening at the Agudah of Avenue L was organized, in part, to smooth down some ruffled EFLer feathers. To be candid I'm not sure how holding an all-English-Speakers event in a venue that can hold 500 people maximum can be considered a consolation prize for the 6,500 plus Sfardim, Yeshiva-leit and non-Khasidish Baalei-Batim who knew little or no Yiddish but dutifully sat through hours of Yiddish speeches at CitField. Even if the July 10th event is an SRO sellout, 90% of the EFLers who, at bare minimum, felt excluded at CitField will NOT be in attendance.

BL"N in my next post I will delve more deeply into this cultural divide and demonstrate how the Kharedi antipathy for English, as well as all other languages other than Loshon Qodesh, Yiddish and Aramaic is not a Johnny-come-lately prejudice but of ancient provenance ratified by at least one great Khasidic thinker.

Lost Tribes in a Lost Cause ...Redux

Due to the co-incidence of Shavuos and Memorial Day this year, and  what with the ongoing tumult and angst over the "Asifa",  I did not come up with anything new to post about a day that should NOT be ignored (Memorial Day).  Somewhat belatedly I present to you this post,  almost 2 years to the day from its first appearance. It contains a few with slight revisions,
During all the official observances for Memorial Day I doubt that any tears were shed, or encomiums offered up, for the confederate soldiers who died fighting the Civil War. For despite what the Daughters of the Confederacy or other "the South shall Rise Again" apologists would like us to believe, history has rendered it's unambiguous verdict. The rebels of the South were, at best, seditious traitors to the Union and the Constitution and, at worst, vile exploitative racists and/or their hired guns. But not to worry. The South has a few days of its own and three states from the old confederacy observe their own memorial day on June 3rd.

In the long and bitter Golus that our people has had to endure we've been asked/forced/ volunteered to give the last full measure of devotion to causes that were not ours. I'm probably not going too far out on a limb to surmise that there were Jewish soldiers fighting for and against the British Empire, Napoleon, The Ottoman Turks, The Tsar, (Czar???) the Bolsheviks and the Allies in World Wars (I ) and maybe even II. But I think nothing quite captures the irony of it all quite as well as the only Jewish military cemetery outside of Israel, The Hebrew Confederate Cemetery, located in Richmond, Virginia.

You see the soldiers and their families did not request or demand separate, exclusively Jewish burial grounds based on Halakha or even basic Qedusha-Havdala consciousness. The cause for this historical oddity coming into existence was the racism of the X-tian warriors for the Lost Cause. The all-Jewish burial ground was created by the anti-Semitism of the two Confederate military cemeteries, in Spotsylvania Court House and Fredericksburg. They refused to bury the Jewish Confederate soldiers killed in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Wilderness. They didn’t want “Jewish boys” in their cemeteries.

So while Jews were good enough to fight, bleed, be dismembered and die-in-war for the Confederacy... they were deemed not quite good enough to rest-in-peace with their fellow Confederates. In a historical inversion of Ruths declaration of fealty to Naomi and her Nation the Rebels, in effect, told the Jewish (Moabite Princes) converts to their cause:
בַּאֲשֶׁר תָּמוּתִי אָמוּת, וְשָׁם לא אֶקָּבֵר= "where thou diest, will I die, but there will I NOT allow you to be buried;".

Living as we do in an era of an all volunteer hi-tech military where the average citizen, let alone those ensconced in Jewish enclaves, has no visceral connection to the recent war waged in Iraq and  the current one in Afghanistan , it's hard for us the imagine the vortex of emotions that Jewish soldiers and their families must have felt during other eras of our long Diaspora . But what we all ought to have felt on Memorial Day is a profound sense of Thanksgiving. Thanks to G-d's agents, the brave US Soldiers who hastened the coming of V.E. Day and the conquest of the Third Reich and thanks to G-d Himself for moving us to a point in history where we and our children must no longer fight for causes not our own, especially unjust and lost ones.

I don't mean to be judgmental of the thirty Jews lying in the Confederate cemetery in Richmond as I am unfamiliar with the circumstances of their conscription/ enlistments/ deaths nor do I know anything about the attitudes of their families and themselves towards the Confederacy or about Black Slavery in the antebellum South. But I would hazard a guess that the Jewish Reverend from the very same capital of the Confederacy, Max Michelbacher of Congregation Beth Ahabah, who penned the following words of prayer would be mightily disillusioned to discover that his coreligionists, who fought alongside the X-tian Confederates in life, would be segregated from them in death :
Here I stand now with many thousands of the sons of the sunny South, to face the foe, to drive him back, and to defend our natural rights. O Lord, G-d of Israel, be with me in the hot season of the contending strife; protect and bless me with health and courage to bear cheerfully the hardships of war...

Be unto the Army of this confederacy, as thou were of old, unto us, thy chosen people— Inspire them with patriotism! Give them when marching to meet, or, overtake the enemy, the wings of the eagle— in the camp be Thou their watch and ward— and in the battle, strike for them, O Almighty G-d of Israel, as thou didst strike for thy people on the plains of Canaan—
...

Give unto the officers of the Army and of the Navy of the Confederate States, enterprise, fortitude and undaunted courage; teach them the ways of war and the winning of victory. Guard and preserve, O L-rd, the President of the Confederate States and all officers, who have the welfare of the country truly at heart. Bless all my fellow-citizens, and guard them against sickness and famine! May they prosper and increase!

For the South "The War of Northern Aggression" AKA"the Second American Revolution" became  "The Lost Cause" . " The dispersed of Judea" fighting, bleeding, losing limbs and even dying in the service of that exercise in futility were Lost Tribes in a Lost Cause. Not only did they die for nothing but they were despised , even in death, by those they were fighting with and for. When the twists and turns of Golus cause our Havdala consciousness to grow fuzzy and dim, the anti-Semites that we live among have a nasty habit of sharpening it up.

Derekh Ahgav- the wrought iron fence around the burial plot of the 30 Jewish Soldiers is considered a work of art.

Qedusha-Havdala. Have you had YOURS today??? Hmmm???
